During testing, a loadbearing element — such as a protected steel beam or column — is subjected simultaneously to:

• A standardised time–temperature curve

• Applied structural load

• Observation for collapse or excessive deflection

The primary performance criterion is R — loadbearing capacity. How long can the element continue to carry load when exposed to fire?

This is not theoretical modelling. It is destructive testing. Failure is recorded precisely. The time achieved becomes the declared resistance period: 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes.

What is certified is not the material alone, but the complete assembly as tested.

Beyond BS 476: The European Framework

While BS 476 remains recognised within the UK, European harmonised standards have expanded the framework.

EN 13381 governs fire resistance testing applied specifically to structural members, particularly in relation to passive protection systems such as intumescent coatings and board encasements.

These standards classify performance under the broader REI system:

• R — Loadbearing capacity

• E — Integrity

• I — Insulation

For structural steel, the focus remains on temperature rise and structural stability. Test data establishes relationships between section factor, protection thickness, and resistance period.

Together, BS 476 and EN standards provide the measurable foundation upon which specification rests.

Why Testing Is System-Specific


A persistent misunderstanding in the industry is the belief that a product is “one-hour rated” or “two-hour rated.”

This is inaccurate.

Fire resistance applies only to the configuration tested: substrate, member size, protection thickness, fixing method, joint detail. Change any variable and the behaviour in fire may change with it.

For example, increasing section factor without increasing coating thickness shortens endurance. Altering board fixings can compromise integrity. Removing joint reinforcement may reduce insulation performance.

Certification ties installation back to a defined test report. Without that reference, the rating has no technical anchor.

Certification: From Furnace to Site


Testing proves performance in principle. Certification ensures that performance can be reproduced in practice.

Third-party certification bodies assess:

• Manufacturer quality control

• Scope of tested applications

• Installer competence and procedures

• Ongoing audit and surveillance

This separation of testing from commercial interest is critical. The entity that benefits from product sale is not the entity that verifies its performance.

When systems are installed outside tested parameters, the risk is rarely visible at handover.

Each deviation appears minor. Yet in a furnace, failure usually begins at precisely these points.

Structural fire protection is not tolerant of approximation. It is designed to delay a predictable rise in temperature for a predictable period. When test conditions are ignored, predictability disappears.

In structural terms, unpredictability is failure.

Modern fire safety regulation demands traceability.

Testing establishes performance. Certification confirms control. Documentation preserves proof.

A compliant structural fire protection package should include:

• Reference to relevant BS 476 or EN test reports

• Third-party accreditation evidence
